Bicentenario & Luche Libre

Bicentenario 2010
200th Anniversary of Independence.
We went to the "El Grito" this year in downtown Querétaro.
Mexicans really know how to throw a fiesta!
The president was here at the plaza and led us in shouting
"¡Viva México!" and the national anthem.

There were tons of people everywhere!  But just in case anyone got out of control there was this trusty army guy and his huge gun to make sure things go smoothly.

Becca and I even found Méxican hipsters and got to practice our spanish.  The locals here are very forgiving with our American accents and lack of vocabulary.

And then there were fireworks shooting off right above our heads from rooftops.
Momentarily I was scared for my life, however mexicans remained calm.

This is the new cool thing for PC volunteers to do.  Luche Libre every Tuesday night at Arena de Querétaro.  This was the Bicentenario fight, El Blanco (the guy getting his ass handed to him in this picture) ended up winning the trophy this year.

Monterrey

During our site visit to Monterrey, I was lucky enough to experience my first cascada.  This was at a national park in the Sierra Madres.  The waterfall was ~200ft and the water was ice cold.  An experience I'll never forget.

Querétaro

México is amazing!  The longer I am here the happier I am with my decision to come here.  I live in a city apartment with my host mother.  Needless to say she is very generous and welcoming.

I will be in Querétaro until November 10th then I will be sent to my post in San Luis De La Paz, Gunanjuato.  Querétaro is a historic town with plenty of culture.  There is a large dynamic of people living here and I see quite a few people with dreadlocks.  The other girl dreadies throw me smiles and thumbs ups as I walk by.

This is Juanita.  She taught me how to make tortillas and I had them with the best salsa to date!

My new friend Karina, showing me some desert survival.
